Time is running out for the Liberal Government to implement mandatory quarantine for two weeks for everyone entering Tasmania in order to protect our state from the coronavirus pandemic.
Labor Leader, Rebecca White, said Tasmanians are rightly concerned the Premier isn’t doing enough.
“Peter Gutwein is trying really hard to keep up the appearance the Government has things under control, but in reality, that isn’t what we are hearing from the community,” Ms White said.
“Just a day after the introduction of the Tasmanian arrival card, it’s already apparent that there are serious holes in the system, with reports that some people haven’t been given arrival cards and there’s a lack of enforcement at airports.
“As an island, we have an opportunity to do what no other state can do – we have a rapidly closing window of opportunity to dramatically slow the spread of this virus by mandating everyone coming into Tasmania to quarantine for 14 days.
“The spread of COVID-19 has entered an exponential growth phase in mainland states. The number of cases in NSW has doubled in the last two days.
“There is just as much risk of the virus spreading across state borders as there is from overseas.
“It is not good enough for Peter Gutwein to say he is waiting for advice and will make an announcement in coming days – he needs to act quickly and decisively now.
“How bad will the situation have to get on the mainland before we require mandatory quarantine for two weeks for everyone entering Tasmania?”
