Has Brooks paid his $60,000 debt to taxpayers or not?

Tasmanian Labor

The Premier must reveal why disgraced former millionaire backbencher Adam Brooks has not repaid in full the $60,000 in legal fees he racked up on the taxpayer defending his lies.

Mr Brooks resigned from the Parliament in disgrace earlier this year after it was proven that he had lied to Parliament, the Premier and investigators over his misuse of a mining business email account while Mining Minister.

The Government has repeatedly refused to answer if the debt had been paid despite the Premier’s head of department telling Estimates the debt would be repaid in full by July.

Ms WHITE – When is the last payment due?

Ms GALE – Normally with any debtor we keep this information confidential because it is people’s personal information. It is my understanding that the debt will be repaid in full by July.

Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon said the Government had one simple question to answer today.

“Has Mr Brooks repaid his debt as agreed or is there money outstanding?” Mr Bacon said.

“This was $60,000 racked up on the taxpayer credit card to defend Mr Brooks’ lies and money he only agreed to repay after Labor pressured the Government on the matter.”
