Two iconic hotels have been shortlisted as finalists in the 2021 Western Australian Heritage Awards for their demonstration of the unique tourism experience that can come from the conservation and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings.
Northam’s Farmers Home Hotel and Fremantle’s Warders Hotel and Emily Taylor are among the 31 finalists for this years’ awards and are among seven projects competing for the Award for Excellence in Conservation or Adaptive Reuse of a State Registered Place.
Over 60 nominations were received for this year’s awards program, illustrating the high level of commitment from individuals and organisations to developing celebrating the history of their local community.
The Heritage Awards, now in their 29th year, recognise outstanding contributions to conserving and protecting historic places for future generations, and celebrate innovative and exemplary practices in the interpretation and promotion of our State’s heritage.
Seven Western Australians have been acknowledged as finalists in the individual award categories for their voluntary or professional commitment to the heritage sector.
A Judges Award, and the lauded Gerry Gauntlett Award, will also be presented to one of the category winners in acknowledgement of their outstanding excellence in the field and commitment to preserving Western Australia’s history.
The 2021 Western Australian Heritage Awards ceremony will be presented on November 19. More information on the finalists can be found at https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/heritage-awards.
As stated by Heritage Minister David Templeman:
“Each year, the Heritage Awards play an important role in promoting the excellent work undertaken by heritage champions across the State.
“The high calibre of finalists this year is testament to their ongoing commitment to preserve our heritage.
“From a small wayside inn, to a significant example of Federation grandeur, Northam’s Farmers Home Hotel has evolved to become a 16-room boutique hotel with a wine bar and community café.
“It’s a similar story of success for the other six finalists in the category of Conservation or Adaptive Reuse of a State Registered Place, which represent a strong commitment to how we consider heritage sites and how they are integrated back into our communities.
“I want to acknowledge Marion Gathercole, a volunteer for the City of Subiaco, for her dedication and commitment across 21 years and more than 120 free guided walking tours promoting the history, heritage and streetscapes through her See Subi on Sunday initiative.
“The City of Belmont is also recognised as a finalist for the Ruth Faulkner Library and Belmont Museum, which was carefully designed to effectively and professionally store, conserve and display the City’s growing collection of over 6,000 artefacts.
“Across all award categories I am impressed and humbled by the high calibre of work being undertaken by individuals and organisations working in the heritage sector to ensure the stories of our past can be retold for generations to come.
“Thank you to the many champions behind each of the entries this year that spend their time managing community Facebook pages, creating nostalgic moments amongst family and friends; who record, capture and care for historic items of value; and who genuinely value the role that heritage can play in creating unique places and experiences.
