This Anzac Day, being able to see familiar faces in the crowd while marching in the town of Geraldton, Western Australia, will make the day more special.

Sergeant Jason Hoare from the 5th Aviation Regiment is planning to return to his home town to march.

The local RSL sub-branch will hold dawn and morning services at the Chapman Road memorial with a small gunfire breakfast held at Birdwood House.

On a previous posting to the Pilbara Regiment, Sergeant Hoare deployed with members of the Regional Force Surveillance Group on Operation Resolute.

Sergeant Hoare said there are plenty of shared memories.

“This is special because I get to gather with those I have served with, to reflect on different experiences,” he said.

“It is amazing how we all remember different stories of our trips and time together.

“Now we’ve had time to reflect on what occurred and how things turned out.”

Sergeant Hoare said other family members had previously served in the military and marching is one way of honouring that service.

“My father was a national serviceman from 1972-73 in infantry, then went on to be an Army reserve officer from 1981-2002,” he said.

“Another family member was a submariner.

“It is always an honour as a veteran and current serving member to march.”

The day is about remembering those who have gone before.

“For me it is a time to pause, reflect and be humble in the acknowledgement of the sacrifice of others,” he said.

“I feel so privileged and proud to be a part of Anzac Day activities in the place I grew up.”
