Labor must stop misleading Tasmanians on housing

Simon Behrakis, Liberal Member for Clark

The Tasmanian Labor Party continues their reputation of offering nothing to Tasmanians but persistent negativity while talking down any effort to bring more housing online.

In stark contrast the Tasmanian Liberal Government is getting on with the job and delivering its ambitious long-term housing plan, making Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family.

Just yesterday, Labor Member for Clark, Ella Haddad hit out at a brand new 10 apartment development in Risdon Vale which will be tenanted within the next fortnight. These were purchased off the plan, not built and left as Labor falsely claimed.

This is typical Labor, desperate to get a political hit through negativity with their abysmal record in Government a convenient afterthought.

Let’s not forget that Labor chronically under-invested in social housing, leaving a $90 million maintenance backlog and selling off public housing properties left, right and centre.

Our record in Government speaks for itself, delivering more than 2,600 homes to Tasmanian families in just three years, almost doubling the 1,500 delivery record of the last four years of the disastrous Labor-Green Government.

Our Government also secured the historic agreement with the Federal Government to waive the State’s $157 million housing debt in 2019.

State Labor had 16 years’ worth of opportunities to do something about the historic debt. They chose to do nothing.

This is a Labor Opposition who has never been able to offer an alternative Budget, and instead, believes that their ideas will pay for themselves or perhaps they will consider sacking nurses again.

They are unable to come up with their own ideas, plagiarising existing Government’s initiatives, such as our successful MyHome Program. An uncapped program which Labor has bizarrely claimed they will expand.

Tasmanians can’t trust Labor when it comes to housing.

Our Government is getting on with the job and doing what matters for all Tasmanians by delivering more homes to Tasmanians in need.

Importantly, we are on track in delivering on our ambitious target of 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.

What can Labor say they have done except for talk down Tasmania?
