The State and Federal governments must intervene to protect Tasmanian jobs and stop a potential flood of cheap European potato chips onto the Australian market because of the coronavirus lockdown.
Shadow Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Water, Shane Broad, attended a rally in support of Tasmanian farmers and contractors at McCain in Smithton today with his Braddon colleague Anita Dow.
“Tasmania’s North West is already doing it tough as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the dumping of cheap European potato chips into Australia is the last thing this region needs as it tries to recover,” Dr Broad said.
“Farmers and factory staff have worked really hard over the last 10 years and gone through a lot of pain to make higher quality products for less.
“It would be devastating for regional Tasmania if the industry was pushed to breaking point by chips being dumped into our markets well below the cost of production.
“Labor will stand with our farmers and contractors to fight this and we urge the State and Federal governments to support the industry and local jobs.”
