Lady Robinsons Beach Management Options: Bayside

Lady Robinsons Beach is a 7km long beach located between the Georges River at Sans Souci and the Cooks River at Kyeemagh. Over the last 80 years this foreshore has been impacted by natural storms and changes to wave patterns caused by major infrastructure in Botany Bay (Sydney Airport, Port Botany and the Kurnell Fuel Depot) which have caused extensive losses of sand along the beach and eroded the fragile dunes which protects Cook Park.

To enable Council to restore and maintain this foreshore for the next 50 years it engaged the Expert Coastal Consultant Manly Hydraulics Laboratory to undertake a study to assess the current condition of the beach and assess past restoration works and develop options to achieve this goal for future generations.

Council, in June 2023, adopted Option 8 for the long-term management of this area which proposed to preserve and maintain 4.76km (68%) of the more stable foreshore for passive recreation with high amenity values while 2.24km (32%) would be treated with hard engineered rock revetments and rock armour at the unstable areas along the foreshore. This option would maintain a sandy beach via ongoing beach nourishment, dune restoration and the provision of public accessways through the dunes.

The other part of this option is to construct hard engineering solutions such as rock revetment walls along areas subject to severe wave impacts and continual erosion. This option will also include upgraded foreshore amenities like observation decks, new pathways, park infrastructure and were possible include devices to be attached to seawalls to foster marine growth and expand existing seagrasses.

This option is now being developed to produce a Lady Robinsons Beach Master Plan which will be subject to community consultation before ultimately being adopted by Council in late 2024.
