In 2015, Leonard received his first free bowel cancer screening test kit in the mail. He decided to complete the test straight away. To his surprise, the test results came back positive.
“I had no symptoms at all and no family history of bowel cancer, so it was a big shock,” he recalls.
Following Leonard’s unexpected results from the kit, his doctor referred him for a colonoscopy where they found a cancerous growth. He was then referred for treatment including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Thankfully, this was ultimately successful, and Leonard has been able to adapt well, returning to his regular life. He is back playing hockey and has also become involved in volunteering at the WA Ostomy Association.
“My biggest concern was whether I’d be able to play hockey again. Thankfully, my surgeon assured me I could, and I still play twice a week today,” Leonard shares.
He adds, “I’m glad I didn’t delay doing the test.”
Since his own experience, Leonard has become a passionate advocate for early detection and encourages others to do the bowel cancer screening test. He admits to feeling frustrated when friends tell him they haven’t yet used their bowel cancer screening kits, as he recognises how crucial timely action can be preventing more serious health issues or diagnoses.
