Masterclass series to dive deeper into nuclear-powered submarines

A two-day masterclass hosted by The University of Western Australia’s Defence and Security Institute will explore the implications for Western Australia of hosting nuclear-powered submarines.

The event will focus on the impact and opportunities created by the first stage of the AUKUS agreement, particularly for employees of Defence, Defence and related industry, National and State government, education and training institutions and workforce agencies.

The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, UWA graduate, former deputy prime minister, leader of the Labor Party and ambassador to the United States, will commence proceedings as the first keynote speaker of the day, followed by the US and British Consular-Generals.

Presenters include leading Australian, US and British policymakers, experts and practitioners from Defence, government, industry and universities.

The Honourable David Johnston, Chair of the UWA Defence and Security Institute, said discussion would focus on the role of government and industry in creating and supporting the national nuclear-powered submarine ecosystem; critical issues and supply chains; and regional security dynamics and national security drivers of the AUKUS enhanced technology sharing partnership.

“Attendees will hear first-hand from experts explaining how nuclear propulsion works; and the acquisition processes and advantages of nuclear-powered submarines,” Mr Johnston said.

Mr Beazley said the masterclass provided superb outreach on Australia’s contemporary strategic settings.

“It offers the opportunity for our business and professional community to gain essential knowledge and there is no better place in the country to view the Indo part of our Indo-Pacific setting,” he said.

The in-person only event is on Wednesday 23 August from 8.15am to 5pm and Thursday 24 August from 8.15am to 6pm at The University Club of Western Australia. Register your expression of interest here.
