More heartbreaking stories unearthed as Minister ignores calls for action

Tasmanian Labor

The number of heartbreaking stories of Tasmanians impacted by shonky builders continues to rise while Minister Elise Archer fails to act.

Shadow Minister for Building and Construction Jen Butler said over the seven weeks since Labor first called for an inquiry into better protections for home owners and the building industry over 100 people had come forward outlining their horrific experiences.

“Each and every week we are hearing a new story of Tasmanians suffering incredible stress and financial hardship due to shonky builders,” Ms Butler said.

“When Parliament returns after the summer break Labor will again introduce a motion to push for a parliamentary inquiry into the building industry.

“At the moment in Tasmania you’ve got more protection when you buy a toaster than what you do when you build a home, this is simply not good enough.

“The building and construction industry cannot continue to be undermined by a few shonky builders whose practices frustrate and undermine the reputation of the whole industry.

“There is a real need for better government oversite and protections in the building industry. I encourage the Minister to read the stories of people impacted by shonky builders.

“Each of these stories is heartbreaking and that is why we won’t stop until the government agrees to support a parliamentary inquiry.”
