More support for North-West men affected by homelessness

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to invest in services designed to specifically meet the needs of those affected by homelessness across the State.

Marram Place, a men’s shelter based in Devonport, was officially opened today.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said that Marram Place is the first of its kind on the North-West Coast and will provide crucial wraparound services to vulnerable men and addressing a service gap in the region.

“I am proud that this $2.5 million investment by the Rockliff Liberal Government is now set to provide accommodation in a home-like environment for men, with or without children, who are homeless,” Minister Street said.

“This service will be provided by respected community provider CatholicCare and will help residents transition to more stable living arrangements.

“This purpose-built facility is part of our ambitious commitment to end homelessness by 2043.

“The two-storey facility includes seven single-bedroom units with ensuites, as well as two living rooms, a kitchen, courtyards, a gym and two interview rooms.

“Family separation is often a traumatic impact of homelessness and Marram Place seeks to change this story for Tasmanian families.

“A separate three-bedroom apartment will accommodate a father with up to four children aged 0 to 18 years.

“The main building includes a separate bedroom for a staff member to allow a 24/7 presence at the site.

“Continuing to improve access to, and the availability and quality of, housing and homelessness services for Tasmanians seeking support is a dedicated focus in the first Action Plan 2023-2027 in our 20-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy.

“But we also know there are Tasmanians who are doing it tough and need our support right now.

“That is why we also invest over $38 million a year on specialist homelessness services to ensure those who need help now are getting the services they need.

“This includes funding for Housing Connect, 19 homeless shelters and three Safe Spaces operating around the State.”

Anyone who is homeless or is at risk of homelessness is encouraged to contact Housing Connect on 1800 800 588.
