Motorbikes for community safety

Wyndham City is continuing the fight against motorbike hooning, by loaning two off-road motorbikes to Victoria Police’s Westgate Highway Patrol Unit to assist with local law enforcement.

Victoria Police will use the motorbikes so officers can patrol off-road areas to combat illegal trail bike riding and motorbike hooning.

Wyndham City’s Mayor and Community Safety portfolio holder Cr Susan McIntyre said as part of a Memorandum of Understanding, which has been extended until 2024, Wyndham City is providing Victoria Police with the two motorbikes.

“Wyndham City has a proactive and collaborative relationship with Victoria Police, and we are continuing to work to find ways in which we can assist local Police and do all we can to ensure community safety.”

“This is a welcome initiative and being able to provide two motorbikes specifically to help keep residents safe is one way Council can assist,” Cr McIntyre said.

Andrew Whelan, Senior Sergeant, Westgate Highway Patrol, said: “Victoria Police appreciate the support from Wyndham City Council in providing expensive motor bikes to target this type of offending. It would be difficult to respond without the help of Wyndham City.”

“Illegal trail bike riding puts the safety of our residents at risk.”

“There is no excuse for someone to use our parks and reserves for illegal riding of motorcycles or other illegal activities.”

Cr McIntyre said: “With school holidays coming up, we need our residents to feel safe and be able to play and use our parks and pathways safely – without the threat of illegal trail bikes.”

If residents are affected by illegal trail bike use on roads or in Council parks and reserves, they should contact the Crime Stoppers Victoria line on 1800 333 000 and they will assist.
