According to the latest Nature Index 2026, the University of Würzburg is among the world’s strongest research universities. In the international ranking, JMU ranks 32nd in Europe, and is among the top ten universities in Germany.

The Nature Index is one of the world’s best-known research rankings. It evaluates research institutions based on their publications in selected prestigious scientific journals in the health and natural sciences and assigns these publications to seven subject areas. Starting this year, the Nature Index also includes publications from the applied sciences and social sciences for the first time.
JMU is particularly strong in publications in the world’s most prestigious scientific journals, Nature and Science. In this category, JMU ranks 76th worldwide and third in Germany.
JMU also achieves outstanding results in several key research fields. In chemistry, it ranks third among German universities, while in the physical sciences, it ranks seventh. In both the health sciences and biological sciences, JMU is among the 15 strongest research universities in Germany. In the newly included field of applied sciences, JMU is also among the top ten universities in Germany. Worldwide it is among the top 220 universities.
University management: “hopes for the excellence title are well-founded”
“JMU’s rankings in the Nature Index confirm the high international visibility of research at the University of Würzburg”, says university president Paul Pauli. “I am particularly pleased that JMU is among the leading institutions in several subject areas. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and excellence of our researchers. At the same time, it shows that our ambition to become a ‘University of Excellence’ is well-founded.”
These results underscore JMU’s research strength across a broad range of academic disciplines, Pauli continues. They demonstrate that the university has achieved international visibility through both excellent fundamental research and application-oriented research.
