New Book Unites Voices for Aboriginal Development

Notre Dame’s Broome Campus played host to launch of the newly published book ‘Voices from the Frontline: Community leaders, government managers and NGO field staff talk about what’s wrong in Aboriginal development and what they are doing to fix it.’ on Thursday, August 24, 2023.

This milestone launch event celebrated the culmination of dedicated research led by Nulungu Research Institute Professor Patrick Sullivan and Research Fellow Dr Kathryn Thorburn, undertaken as part of the first ever Australian Research Council Discovery Grant awarded to Notre Dame, “Reciprocal Accountability and Public Value in Aboriginal Organisations.”

“This book marks a significant step forward in understanding the challenges faced by First Nations communities. ‘Voices from the Frontline’ amplifies the narratives of those directly involved, providing a compelling case for change and mobilising action towards a better future,” Professor Sullivan said.

‘Voices from the Frontline’ is a collective effort, assembling contributions from prominent figures who are at the forefront of providing essential services to Aboriginal communities across government, non-government, and community sectors. The book offers an opportunity for these leaders to engage in candid conversations about shared challenges and innovative solutions.

Peter Yu, Vice-President First Nations Portfolio at the Australian National University, hailed the book’s uniqueness, saying, “What makes this book particularly compelling is that it does not adhere to the conventional academic approach of presenting a thesis supported by empirical evidence. Instead, its thesis is powerfully conveyed through the first-hand voices of those who work within the failing system of Aboriginal community service delivery.”
