The Federal and State Governments remain focused on delivering our plan to build a better health system for all Tasmanians as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator at the W.P. Holman Clinic in Launceston has been installed, for the treatment of patients.

Linear Accelerators deliver highly accurate radiation treatment for patients, an essential and integral part of any modern cancer facility.

Federal Liberal Member for Bass, Bridget Archer MP welcomed the arrival of the new cancer fighting equipment.

“The new Linear Accelerator will make a real difference to both clinicians at the W. P. Holman Clinic and the patients receiving treatment,” Mrs Archer said.

“Importantly, this new equipment will deliver radiation to small areas with pin point accuracy and target different tumours in the body, providing a treatment option to a broad section of the community.”

“I am delighted that through the effective collaboration between State and Federal Governments, we are able to provide more of the modern equipment for our world-class clinicians to treat hundreds of patients every year.”

Minister for Health, Sarah Courtney, was also pleased to view the new equipment on the back of the arrival of a new-state-of-the-art CT Scanner earlier this year.

“We will also be installing two new Linear Accelerators in Launceston and Hobart next year, which will give locals living with cancer access to the best technology available.” Ms Courtney said.

“Cancer patients around Tasmania receive amazing care from our highly skilled clinicians and support staff, and I am delighted to be able to support them with this new equipment at a time in their lives when they need it most.”

This equipment was delivered through the State and Federal Government’s Commonwealth Radiation Oncology Health Program Grants announced last year. Overall, $28 million is being invested in upgrading the state’s ageing oncology equipment.

The Tasmanian and the Federal Liberal Governments are committed to improving health outcomes for all Tasmanians and these investments will go a long way to making life easier for both staff and patients.
