New Research Funding To Support Asia-Pacific Solutions

Dept of Industry, Science and Resources

The RCRI will fund scientists, researchers and industry partners to work together over 12 to 15 months.

The program aims to produce applied research on regional challenges and strengthen partnerships across countries and sectors.

It will award funding through 2 competitive rounds addressing challenges in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The first round supports collaborative applied research on circular economy, waste reduction and sustainable resource use. It will make $580,000 available to successful projects. Grants will range from $50,000 to $145,000.

Waste volumes in Asia and the Pacific are projected to reach 110-115 million tonnes by 2030, according to UNEP. This round seeks research-led, cross-disciplinary solutions to address this challenge.

Competitive proposals should show how the project can contribute to value retention, resource efficiency and regional resilience. They should also show clear pathways to adoption and benefits in diverse Asia-Pacific contexts.

The International Science Council Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific will manage the initiative. The Australian Academy of Science hosts the Regional Focal Point. Our department is also giving $10 million to support the program from 2023 to 2028.

We’re excited to hear about all the innovative research ideas. So, make sure you get your application in soon!
