Mildura locals and visitors will soon have more space to escape the sun and enjoy the outdoors with hundreds of new trees to line the city, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing yesterday viewed works for the Mildura CBD Urban Regener8 project which will revitalise the regional city’s streetscape with more shade, accessibility and spaces for outdoor dining.
The project has been made possible by a $300,000 investment from the Labor Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund.
The project will build new footpaths and walkways connecting the CBD’s tree-lined streets to the riverfront, linking local landmarks and enriching the beauty of the iconic town. With more than 50 trees already planted, the project will see nearly 500 trees transform the city.
The streetscapes will feature new outdoor dining areas at local hospitality venues – boosting capacity, local spending and investment opportunities. These tree-lined areas will also provide additional shade for locals and visitors to be able to enjoy the outdoors during the summer.
The streetscape revitalisation is part of Mildura Rural City Council’s broader CBD plan to create a greener town and see the city become a regional oasis on the Murray River.
The second stage of the Mildura Riverfront Powerhouse Precinct project has been made possible by a $5.5 million investment from the Labor Government Building Works package and the Regional Infrastructure Fund.
The Powerhouse project will create 34 jobs and includes upgrades to the existing Powerhouse building and the creation of a Village Square that will feature a digital information platform, cafe, outdoor area, public facilities and carpark.
The Regional Infrastructure Fund is part of the Government’s flagship Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund. Since 2015, the Government has invested more than $36 billion in regional and rural Victoria.
