NSW police charge two after contraband investigation at correctional centre in Sydney’s north-west

Detectives have charged an additional two people as part of an ongoing investigation into the introduction of contraband into a correctional facility in Sydney’s north-west.

Earlier this month, detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit established Strike Force Bundawarrah to investigate reports of alleged corrupt activity by a male correctional officer.

So far during the investigation, detectives have charged a 26-year-old man, who is a correctional officer, and 31-year-old man, who is an inmate. The men remain before the courts.

Following further investigations, strike force investigators attended a correctional facility in Cessnock and arrested a 30-year-old inmate yesterday (Tuesday 28 April 2020) about 3.15pm.

The man was taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with four counts of supply prohibited drug and two counts of corruptly give/offer to give agent benefit.

It will be alleged he planned to introduce contraband to the facility in Sydney’s north-west.

About 5.15pm, officers arrested a 34-year-old woman at Cessnock Police Station.

She was charged with three counts of supply prohibited drug and supply specified substance otherwise than by wholesale.

Police will allege the woman supplied a package which contained contraband and prohibited drugs to a correctional officer at Blacktown on Saturday 18 April 2020.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 29 April 2020), while the woman was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Cessnock Local Court on Tuesday 9 June 2020.

Investigations under Strike Force Bundawarrah continue.
