The City of Adelaide will welcome a delegation of visitors from Malaysia as part of the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Adelaide and George Town.
The group of 28 representatives from Penang will arrive on Sunday before spending five days attending official functions, meetings and visiting key locations of economic and social significance.
Members of the delegation include politicians, the Mayor of Penang, councillors and staff.
Celebratory banners and the Malaysian flag will be flown within the Adelaide CBD during their visit.
Their itinerary includes an official welcome at Government House, dinners at the Adelaide Town Hall and Adelaide Festival Centre and visits to the State Library, South Australia Museum, SA Heath and Medical Research Institute (SAMHRI) and Lot Fourteen.
Following specific requests for tours, they also will have excursions to the Tonsley Innovation Precinct and renewable energy facilities on Torrens Island.
The delegation also will participate in a formal tree planting on Montefiore Hill, near the statue of Colonel William Light.
Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the council was honoured to be hosting the delegation to celebrate half a century of cordial friendship between Adelaide and George Town.
“Penang has a special place in the history of Adelaide, as it was the birthplace of Colonel William Light who designed our city and Park Lands,” said the Lord Mayor.
“Colonel Light’s father was the founder of George Town, Penang’s capital city, which, like Adelaide, is internationally known for its heritage buildings.
“Maintaining sister city relationships ensures Adelaide, as the capital city of South Australia, has an international presence and economic opportunities based on reciprocal knowledge and respect.
“We have other sister cities in the United States, New Zealand, Japan and China. This visit by Penang is part of nurturing our global network.”
The delegation will leave Adelaide on Saturday, 9 December, following an official dinner hosted by the Lord Mayor in the Adelaide Town Hall.
