ONE YEAR LATER: The Hodgman Liberal Government failing on jobs, particularly for women and young people

Tasmanian Labor
  • Tasmania’s unemployment rate the highest since 2016
  • Figures show a decline of women in the workforce
  • More young people struggling to find work
  • The latest Labour Force Figures for Tasmania paint a bleak picture for jobs growth, particularly among women.

Tasmania’s unemployment rate of 6.2 per cent is the second highest in the nation.

Shadow Minister for Economic Development, Jobs and ICT, Michelle O’Byrne, said the statistics for women in the workforce was particularly worrying.

“There are 6,600 less women employed in Tasmania since the election in March last year,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“This is not good enough and the Premier Will Hodgman must detail what his Government is doing to address this worrying trend.

“The Government should be ashamed by these figures which show Tasmania’s unemployment rate is at its highest level since November 2016.

“The unemployment rate outside of Hobart now sits at 7.4 per cent – the worst since July 2016.

“It’s a similar story for our young people with the unemployment rate for Tasmanians aged between 15 and 24 also the worst since July 2016 at 18.6 per cent.

“The Premier is so preoccupied by all the instability and scandal within his Government that he’s failing to address the crucial issues facing our state.”
