The Liberal Government’s lack of any progress on its promised passenger rail service for Hobart’s northern suburbs is letting down locals, particularly young people.
Labor MLC for Elwick Josh Willie said the government promised more than two years ago to deliver rail services within five years, but has done nothing since.
“After the State and Federal Governments agreed to accelerate a City Deal for Hobart in 2018, the then Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding promised to “pull out all stops” to get the northern suburbs passenger rail built within five years,” Mr Willie said.
“But no money has been spent and nothing has been done, leaving the people of Hobart’s northern suburbs with limited public transport options.
“Not only would a passenger rail service help invigorate the region and help with our COVID-19 recovery, it would provide a much-needed transport option, particularly for young people, connecting them with school, work placements and employment opportunities.
“The Indie School is one of 15 schools located within walking distance from the corridor that would benefit from a passenger rail service.
“The Indie School has achieved good results in keeping kids engaged with their education, and its staff and students recognise the need for better transport options to remove barriers to kids getting to school.
“The government has had a consultant’s report since at least August which was paid for with public money. Michael Ferguson still hasn’t released it, leaving transport options, jobs creation and economic stimulus on hold.
“The Liberals cannot keep stalling on this game changer for the northern suburbs and Greater Hobart area. It must release the report and get on with delivering better transport options for the region.”
