Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award Finalists Announced

Finalists in the Territory’s only portrait art award have been announced with 27 artists now in the running for the $10,500 prize pool.

The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award encourages creative excellence by Territory artists and celebrates the significant contribution that senior Territorians make to our community.

Now in its 22nd year, the award draws great interest and participation from around the Territory and is a highlight for the Territory’s art sector.

There are four award categories including:

o First Prize – $7000 Acquisition Award

o Second Prize – $2000

o Third Prize – $500

o People’s Choice – $1000

The award winners, to be announced on 4 December 2020, will be chosen by a distinguished panel of judges.

This year’s entries will be exhibited at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs between 4 December 2020 and 7 March 2021. The exhibition will be available to view on the Araluen Arts Centre website after the event has opened.

Members of the public are encouraged to vote for their favourite works of art in person at the Araluen Arts Centre. The votes will determine the People’s Choice prize which will be announced on 12 March 2021.

Submissions for the 2020 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award were received from locations including Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Arlparra and Wadeye. The subject matter includes family members, self-portraits and notable Territorians, including Northern Territory Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie and sports broadcaster and anti-domestic violence campaigner Charlie King.

As noted by Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Chansey Paech:

“I look forward to viewing the submissions which have been sent in from all corners of the Territory.

“This is an exciting time of year for the arts sector as it celebrates some of the fantastic portraiture by Territory artists and of course the contribution of senior Territorians.

“Art is vital to enriching the human experience and I am proud to support local artists.

“The Territory Labor Government will continue to support our visual storytellers.”
