Progress towards improving gender equality in ACT

Progress of the ACT Government’s plan Equity Together to improve gender equality is on track with one action complete and 27 actions underway one year on since its launch in March 2020.

The first action complete is tenancy reforms to improve housing security, accessibility and fairness for tenants.

These reforms better meet the needs of victims of domestic and family violence, including issues of economic control and allow tenants to terminate a tenancy to move into social housing or aged care.

Despite 2020 having significant challenges, over the past 12 months the government together with the community, has shown an ongoing commitment to the delivery of all 29 actions under this plan.

Work is well underway to improve outcomes and opportunities for women and girls in the ACT including:

  • Increasing the number of women in the construction industry with a target for 10 per cent female employment in the construction industry in the ACT;
  • Supporting women into leadership roles working towards a target for 50 per cent female representation on all ACT Government boards and committees;
  • Developing and launching an online triage navigation portal to support young people in the ACT seeking mental health and wellbeing support; and
  • Reforming the human service system and better focus on early support and wellbeing in the first 1000 days of a child’s life.

Equity Together the Second Action Plan 2020-2022 is the second stage of the ACT Women’s Plan 2016-2026.
