Queensland Youth Week art competition winners announced

Queensland’s young artists have talent that’s out of this world, with an intergalactic-inspired artwork taking out top honours in the 2019 Queensland Youth Week art prize.

Member for Gaven Meghan Scanlon said Destiny Unlimited, by 17 year old Gold Coast artist Scully Sommai, featured the artist’s 14 year old sister.

“It’s a fabulous piece of art,” she said.

“We wanted artwork that really captured the idea of the unlimited potential of Queensland’s young people and their capacity to build something incredible in the future, because they’ll change the world.

“Scully’s artwork has all of that, showing a teenager imagining entire new worlds into existence – it’s awesome stuff.”

Scully, who next year begins a double university degree in environmental and data science, says the competition inspired her to create a galactic image reflecting the unlimited expanse of space.

“The stars and planets orbit around an image of my sister in a spacesuit,” she said.

“In that very instant, she is thinking about her future and the emotions this thinking space creates.

“My image shows her happy energy as you can see in the pops of bright coloured stars and planets in orbit.

“Just like space, our journey in life is a cycle with no restrictions.”

Minister for Youth Di Farmer congratulated Scully on her winning artwork, and said it would be used across the state on promotions and materials for Queensland Youth Week, including the website.

“There probably aren’t too many 17 year olds in Queensland who can say their artwork has branded a state-wide marketing campaign,” she said.

“She’s also won a $500 gift card and a Sony digital camera, and I hope these will be useful to her as a budding scientist and an emerging artist.

“Congratulations also to our two runners up, Emma Hutt and Linden Pike, who will each receive a $100 JB Hi-Fi gift voucher.

“We called for entries from right across Queensland, and I was just so impressed with the entries I saw.

“We really have some incredible talent here in Queensland and I am sure we will see great things from our entrants in the future.”

Queensland Youth Week 2019 will run from 3 to 14 April, after being extended to allow high schools to join the celebrations during the last few days of term.
