Registrations are now open for Run Army 2023!
Run Army is a 5km and 10km running event that promotes resilience, health and wellbeing across Australia – and now the world – to raise funds for Legacy.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, AO, DSC, said this event offered Army an opportunity to promote healthy living, connection to community, and support a great cause.
“Participating in Run Army allows us to come together as a community and share the benefits of fitness with family, friends, and other runners to help raise vital funds for Legacy,” Lieutenant General Stuart said.
President of Run Army, Major General Jake Ellwood, said he was excited to get more members of Brisbane’s wider community involved in the event, which is now in its third year.
“Last year we moved Run Army from Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera to the Brisbane CBD as a way to better integrate with our community and involve a wider demographic of people,” Major General Ellwood said.
“This year we want to see more of that. We want the entire community to run with us on Sunday 23 April 2023. You don’t need to be affiliated with the Australian Army or any Service to be a part of Run Army.
“The benefits of walking and running are well known and that’s why Run Army was started. It’s about promoting resilience, health and wellbeing for everyone, for a stronger community.”
Last year the number of participants tripled from Run Army’s inaugural event in 2021, with 3500 people lacing up their runners in person or virtually, and raising over $170,000 for Legacy.
Legacy CEO, Brendan Cox, said it was a phenomenal result and the support from the community directly helped the families of veterans suffering after the death or injury of a loved one.
“We’re proud to be partnering with the Australian Army once again to bring Run Army to Brisbane, after two great events in 2021 and 2022,” Mr Cox said.
A new training t-shirt has been designed for the event by Legatee, runner and proud Cobble Cobble woman Zoe Carson, who has experienced first-hand the support Legacy provides to Defence families.
The artwork features the sun – representing the rising sun, and providing a guiding light for soldiers to follow towards meeting and gathering places. The paths lead off to resting place symbols, as an ode to veterans who can now rest and have peace.
Major General Ellwood said Run Army was special as it took place on the weekend before Anzac Day each year.
“This timing helps bring the broader community together at an important time on the Australian calendar.
“We invite the Brisbane and wider Australian community to join us in recognising the Anzac spirit and push themselves physically and mentally alongside current serving soldiers,” Major General Ellwood said.
With a virtual event option available to all to complete any time between Sunday 16 and Sunday 23 April 2023, Run Army is going international with registrations across Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Timor Leste, Canada, India, Sweden, New Caledonia, Fiji and the United States.
There will also be Run Army satellite events held in Townsville and Darwin.
