City of Stonnington CEO Jacqui Weatherill has announced East Ward Councillor Glen Atwell has resigned from Council for family reasons, effective immediately, and will not stand in the upcoming Local Government elections.
Ms Weatherill paid tribute to Mr Atwell’s passion for and service to the community of Stonnington, particularly his unstinting advocacy for universal access and inclusive design of Council services, facilities and infrastructure.
Among his many achievements during his time on Council, Glen was instrumental in the “Changing Places” program of purpose-built facilities which enable people with profound disabilities and their carers to access bathroom amenities at Chadstone Shopping Centre and more recently at Prahran Square.
“Glen has led the introduction of Changing Places to Stonnington for a number of years and the City is all the more compassionate and inclusive as a direct result of his tireless advocacy,” Ms Weatherill said.
“But Glen’s contribution has been felt across all aspects of Council business, including his diligent focus on good governance and economic management of council, and his advocacy for residents and local business.
“Glen is widely respected throughout the sector for his professionalism, exceptional communications skills and ability to work with multiple stakeholders on complex and difficult issues.”
City of Stonnington Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos said Mr Atwell had been an extraordinary leader for the residents of East Ward. His contribution has been invaluable and he will be missed by all.
“On behalf of my fellow Councillors and the staff of the City of Stonnington, we wish Glen and his family all the best for the future,” Cr Stefanopoulos said.
Mr Atwell said it had been an honour to represent and serve the East Ward community.
“I’ve done my best each day to help make our neighbourhood a better place. To listen to and act on residents’ concerns. To advocate for those in need. To focus Council, always, on the needs and aspirations of its people,” Mr Atwell said.
“It’s been humbling to get to know and assist so many in our community. I’ve cherished the role, but it’s simply time for me to focus on family. I must thank Laura, my wife, for her unwavering support and limitless patience. Laura’s been my voice of reason and, with three young kids at home, she made it possible for me to serve the community.”
Following consultation with the Minister for Local Government, the vacancy left by Mr Atwell will remain unfilled until the election.
