South Australia will welcome seven of the 10 highest-ranked T20 teams later this year – including Australia – as Adelaide Oval locks in some of the world’s best cricketing superstars.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has confirmed today Adelaide Oval will feature newly crowned ICC Men’s T20 world champions Australia, along with the runners-up New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
A total of 10 teams will play in Adelaide in six Super 12 double-header pool matches from 2 November, ahead of a semi-final on Sunday, 10 November.
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Corey Wingard, joined Events South Australia executive director Hitaf Rasheed, South Australian Cricket Association acting chief executive Jodie Newton, and current Adelaide Striker Wes Agar to announce the draw.
“This is a massive coup to have seven of the top 10 teams in the world playing right here in Adelaide and at the best cricket venue on the planet,” Minister Wingard said.
“Nothing compares to the turf on Adelaide Oval and it’s absolutely terrific news that we are going to host ICC T20 world champions Australia, along with runners-up New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
“Adelaide will get a piece of some incredible cricket action and we hope the superstars of the game can inspire the next generation of South Australian players.
“Since 2018, the State Government has invested more than $31 million to support cricket and our future stars.”
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 chief executive officer Michelle Enright said today’s fixture release was a great opportunity for fans to start planning their T20 World Cup experience – now just 268 days away.
“By having matches spread across the nation in seven host cities and making tickets accessibly priced, we are hoping as many people as possible will be able to experience the incredible atmosphere that international fans bring to global sporting events, as well as the unique, fast-paced and unpredictable nature of T20 cricket,” she said.
“World Cups are about bringing people from all backgrounds and cultures together and we hope to safely host over 800,000 fans at Australia’s iconic cricket venues later this year.”
