Stable on the Strand will move to Riverway for the first time this year, with Townsville City Council throwing its support behind the much-loved community event with $50,000 in grants and fee waivers.
The Christmas event is celebrating its 20th year this Christmas and is expecting up to 35,000 visitors across its five-day run.
The $50,000 grant was approved at today’s Council meeting after being raised in the Community and Cultural Development Committee meeting earlier this month.
Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Council was proud to support the event, which had become a centrepiece in Townsville’s annual Christmas celebrations.
“Stable on the Strand is an integral part of our city’s festivities each year and I am pleased that Council is giving the event a helping hand this year as it moves from the Strand to Riverway for the first time,” Cr Greaney said.
“Pulling off an event like Stable on the Strand is no small feat, especially considering there are up to 35,000 attendees across the five days.
“By approving this grant Council is able to help ensure all of Townsville has access to this free family-friendly activity to share the spirit of Christmas.”
Cr Greaney said Stable on the Strand had a long history in Townsville.
“This year marks the 20th anniversary of Stable on the Strand sharing free festivities with Townsville families,” she said.
“Between displays, activities, performances and live animals to visit there’s something for everyone at Stable on the Strand.
“Last month Council awarded Stable on the Strand stalwart Richard Hosking with a Senior of the Year Award. Richard has been working on the event since before it launched 20 years ago and has once again committed countless hours to Stable on the Strand this year ahead of its launch at Riverway.”
Stable on the Strand will run from December 18 – 22 at Riverway. Entry is free.
