In light of the City of Fremantle’s failure to withdraw their consent to the occupancy of Pioneer Park in a reasonable timeframe, the State Government has taken the necessary action to protect the community.
It is in the public interest, and in the interest of the vulnerable people who are being taken advantage of by the activists and organisers of the camp, for the State Government to intervene.
On Friday afternoon, Lands Minister Ben Wyatt signed the revocation order under Section 50(2) of the Land Administration Act 1997 to remove the City of Fremantle as the management body for Pioneer Park.
The responsibility of the park was granted to Heritage Minister David Templeman.
As the manager and responsible body of the park, the State Government has immediately requested that WA Police assist in ensuring trespasses on the park are no longer permitted.
As a result, WA Police together with the Department of Communities and service providers will work together to close the camp and clear Pioneer Park in a safe manner as soon as possible.
Importantly, every person who is willing to accept support and is sleeping rough at Pioneer Park is being offered appropriate accommodation by the Department of Communities and its funded service providers.
