Stop dumping illegal rubbish and unwanted items

Residents have been urged to stop dumping illegal rubbish and unwanted items at local opportunity shops and charity stores.

As ‘op shops’ and charity stores begin to reopen as pandemic restrictions ease, local outlets have reported a significant increase in donations. However, up to a third of items that are donated to charity stores are not suitable for sale.

Council is partnering with local op shops and charity stores to stop dumping of illegal rubbish and unwanted items.

Director Assets and Operations, Shane Walden said Council understood residents wanted to show their support for local organisations.

“However, if the correct processes were not followed it can create a financial burden for these not-for-profit organisations as well as a strain on volunteers,” he said.

Op shops and charity stores have different requirements regarding what items they can accept. Council encourages all residents to check before you donate, to make sure your donation counts.

“We are #InThisTogether, so let’s free up op shops to help our most vulnerable community members.”
