Skaters young and older, experienced and novice are invited to get down to the Jingili Skate Park before the dry season disappears for City of Darwin’s multidiscipline competition, Street Heat.
The competition is free to enter and is being held at Jingili Waters Gardens on Saturday September 14. For those not competing Street Heat gives the opportunity to can catch local shredders as they compete in freestyle scootering and BMX, quad skating and park skateboarding.
Registrations open from 3.00pm on the day and the first competition kicks off at 4.00pm with the scooter riders.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that “City of Darwin is proud to support active recreation opportunities, especially those focussed on our youth population.
“Via our LAUNCH youth program, City of Darwin supports a regular skate park program, including bi-annual competitions that provide exciting opportunities to celebrate the work skaters and park riders put into building their skills.”
City of Darwin actively supports diversification of park user groups through an annual event calendar which includes fortnightly skate nights, regular competitions and special events such as International Women’s Day Skate. All these initiatives aim to build skills and foster relationships between active recreation communities.
Hannah Illingworth, Skate Development Officer at City of Darwin and herself an experienced skater, encouraged competitors to register for Street Heat.
“Street Heat isn’t just about the competitors sweating it out on the park,” she said “it’s also a chance to get out and enjoy Darwin’s wonderful outdoor lifestyle before the tropical summer sets in.”
“I encourage anyone with an interest in skating to come to the event, you will be guaranteed of a great afternoon.”
Street Heat will be held on Saturday September 14 from 3.00pm until 6.00pm at the Jingili Skate Park, in Jingili Water Gardens, on the corner of Freshwater and Trower Roads.
Prizes have been donated by local skate stores Proper and Shiner Town and local café Good Thanks.
Waivers must be signed by every competitor or their parent/guardian if they are under 18. All competitors under 18 must also wear a helmet. Spare helmets will be available on the day.
