Whether you’re a Marvel devotee, a fan of the DC Comics or a Manga enthusiastic, celebrate your love of the graphic novel at Comic Fest this weekend.
Building on the resurgence of the graphic novel and riding the success of the Marvel and DC Comic movie franchises, Sunday’s Comic Fest has a morning of free activities dedicated to all things comic and cosplay.
Councillor Cathy Zeiger said that libraries of today were not just for traditional texts.
“Across our Cairns Libraries branches, we have a great range of comic books and graphic novels available to suit readers from primary school age and up,” Cr Zeiger said.
“Reading is such an important part of a person’s life, and these types of books are great as they often engage the most reluctant of readers and promote literacy.”
Over 500 people attended last year’s inaugural event – a third of them in costume.
“It’s great to see people embracing the event and I’d encourage everyone to put on their favourite superhero costume and have a little fun,” Cr Zeiger said.
“We all know little ones love the chance to dress up, but getting in costume can also be heaps fun for us ‘older kids’ and give parents a great way to engage with their children.”
Those attending this year’s event will have the chance to meet author and artist Nicki Greenberg from Melbourne, who will deliver a comic art workshop and public talk about graphic novels, while local children’s author Natalie Mooney is set to delight the youngest attendees as a guest reader at Superhero Storytime.
There will also be a screening of award winning film A Letter to Momo by Japanese animation director Hiroyuki Okiura.
Attendees can also get expert tips from the Cosplay make-up and hair demonstrations, snap a selfie in the photo booth, explore the 3D body scanning booth, engage in the STEAM Catapult Challenge and visit the Headspace Cairns stall for activities and information on mental health.
Comic Fest will take over the Cairns City Library, located at the corner of Abbott and Aplin streets, this Sunday 14 July from 9am until midday.
Dress-up is encouraged but participants are asked to consider the family-friendly nature of the event in their costume selection. Swords, knives, other metal objects with an edge and weaponry capable of shooting projectiles are not permitted. Children aged under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.
