Tackling graffiti on private property

Do you know your options when it comes to managing graffiti on your property?

Rockhampton Regional Council is reaching out to let residents and business owners know that there is help available.

Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said while vandals may sometimes target public property, private residences are not immune to damage caused by graffiti.

“Our crews are regularly called out to remove graffiti from public spaces and buildings owned and operated by Council, but sometimes it is homeowners or businesses that are left to clean up the mess,” Cr Wickerson said.

“Council has free Graffiti Removal Kits available, but we are also encouraging residents to take a proactive stance to minimise your risk of being targeted.

“Firstly, ensure your property is secure and well-lit as a deterrent.

“Try limiting the amount of solid surface area around your home by planting creepers, bushy foliage, or install grilles or lattice along walls.

“Remove graffiti as soon as possible after reporting it. Graffiti that is left tends to attract more.

“Keep a supply of colour-matched paint so you can quickly paint over any graffiti in future. Protective coatings and smooth surfaces can also make removal easier.”

If your property is affected by graffiti it should be reported to police in the first instance. Contact Policelink by phone on 131 444 or follow the link to www.policelink.qld.gov.au
