The widening of Castletown Beach is on track for completion late next month, with more than 40,000 cubic metres of sand pumped 3.6 kilometres from Bandy Creek Boat Harbour to replace eroding sections of the beach.
To widen the beach, temporary onshore pipelines are transporting sand from the entrance channel at the Bandy Creek Boat Harbour where dredging is underway to restore depths and ensure safe access to the harbour.
About 40,000 cubic metres of sand will be pumped to replace eroding sections of the beach, widen the coastline, protect the foreshore and enhance the beach for locals and visitors.
The $1.5 million joint project is scheduled for completion late next month.
The McGowan Government recently announced $4 million of coastal grants to projects across the State to help protect and enhance WA’s iconic coastline.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
“This project is an innovative way to manage coastal erosion at one of Esperance’s popular beaches.
“More than 40,000 cubic metres of sand will be pumped from Bandy Creek Boat Harbour to help widen the beach and manage coastal erosion.
“A wider beach will also be enjoyed by those visiting the area as West Australians continue to Wander out Yonder, exploring many wonderful destinations our State offers including Esperance.
“WA has a beautiful coastline but it is a fragile environment – which is why we have recently allocated $4 million to 54 projects across the State to ensure we can sustainably manage potential threats and pressures on our diverse, vast coastline.”
