More than 50,000 students are returning to public schools across Canberra this week – including for the first time in the suburb of Kenny, where the city’s newest and 91st public school will open its doors.
For students of Shirley Smith High School, today is a unique experience – this year 7 is the very first cohort of students to enter its state-of-the-art learning spaces. In time, the school will cater for up to 800 year 7-10 students in the growing East Gungahlin region.
Consistent with the ACT Government’s commitment to take action on climate change, the all-electric school features sustainable materials, air permeability membranes and a solar power generation system.
The school also features a double gymnasium with basketball, netball, futsal and volleyball markings, a covered hard court suitable for basketball and netball, and its oval can be used for soccer, rugby union and rugby league games. The multipurpose hall is also available for community use.
“The ACT Government is continuing to make strong investments in public education all across Canberra,” Minister for Education and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry said.
“Over the holidays work was carried out at multiple schools, with new and refurbished facilities opening this term.
“I wish all the students, teachers and staff across Canberra a great first day of term and a fantastic 2024 school year.”
