City to close public facilities to restrict gatherings

Following the latest directions from the Australian and Victorian governments, the City has decided to close access to a range of public facilities for gatherings until further notice.

The closures, which come into effect from midnight, apply to:

  • Eastern Beach Reserve;
  • City-managed playgrounds; and
  • Skate and bike parks

Signage will be installed progressively across more than 320 City-managed playgrounds, skate and bike parks over the coming days.

The decision is in line with new nationwide restrictions on social gatherings, aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and minimising impacts on the community.

The stage two shutdown, which comes into effect tomorrow, aims to limit gatherings to a maximum of 10 people.

The facilities included in this stage of City closures have been identified as a higher risk of gatherings of greater than 10 people.

The closures also reduce the potential for the disease to spread to others via contaminated surfaces.

The new measures, agreed to by the National Cabinet, also impact on the Breamlea Caravan Park.

From tomorrow, the park will not be available for casual use.

Long-term residents, and people staying at the caravan park while their primary residence is unavailable, can remain in the park.

The shop and post office are unaffected.

The City encourages the community to abide by the closures and follow the government directives to stay home as much as possible.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher

We all have a role to play in minimising the spread of the virus and doing what we can to protect the community. It is vital that people comply with the restrictions set out by the federal and state governments.

Social distancing will save lives. Keeping at least 1.5 metres away from others is the best chance we have to keep you, your family and the wider community safe.
