COVID-19 – Infringement Notices – 12 and 13 April 2020

Police have issued three infringement notices for failing to abide by the Chief Health Officer Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environmental Health Act 2011.

On Sunday 12 April 2020, a 52-year-old male in Gray hosted a social gathering with 20 people in attendance. Police attended after the party was reported by a concerned member of the public. The primary occupant, who had previously been cautioned for hosting a gathering, was issued an infringement.

On Monday 13 April 2020, a 43-year-old male breached his quarantine by flying to Melbourne without an exemption to travel. The male had recently returned to Darwin and failed to quarantine on this and a previous occasion. This is the second infringement notice issued to the man for failing to quarantine.

Also on Monday 13 April 2020, a 25-year-old male in the Darwin CBD was observed by police using gym equipment along the Darwin Esplanade. The man accessed the equipment by lifting up the boundary tape of the clearly closed area.

All three men were issued with an infringement penalty of $1,099 each and referred to Environmental Health Officers to conduct a further risk assessment to determine if contact tracing is required.

Over the Easter long weekend, NT Police, Public and Environmental Health officers and Australian Defence Force members conducted around 800 compliance checks.

4,428 compliance checks have now been completed with 24 fines issued.
