Vivid pylon projections, a special appearance from Bluey and a series of stunning fireworks wowed people around harbour as they celebrated the start of 2024.
Crowds were dazzled by a kaleidoscope of colour during the iconic fireworks display as well as being treated to powerful First Nations story-telling and a special moment to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House.
The event was witnessed by millions, from the people who flocked to the harbour foreshore to those who watched the event online or on television.
“What a stunning evening that was. Every year we try to do something bigger and better than the year before and I think as we kick off 2024, many of us will agree this was a truly spellbinding night that will hopefully kick off a safe, peaceful year ahead,” Clover Moore AO, Lord Mayor of Sydney said.
“It is with immense pride that Sydney leads the world’s New Year’s Eve celebrations as one of the first countries to bring in the New Year. Last night’s event really demonstrated why the Sydney celebrations are heralded as one of, if not the best New Year’s parties on the planet.
“The fireworks, projections, music and live performances told the story, not just of our remarkable city but also of our remarkable people, as the City showcased an exciting, inclusive and inspirational event.
“I’d like to extend a warm thank you to all those involved, from our event organisers to the clean-up crews, everyone who worked tirelessly once again to make this event a wonderful success.”
At midnight, the sky over the harbour erupted as 36,000 shooting effects including comets, mines and crossettes, burst into the night sky.
The display also featured white and gold pyrotechnics as a special nod to commemorate the Sydney Opera House’s 50th anniversary.
The 9pm Calling Country show featured First Nations artists We Are Warriors sharing stories inspired by sky, land and sea through art, song, sound and dance.
First Nations hip hop supergroup 3%, were joined on stage by musical guests Baarka, Mi-Kaisha and Jada Weazel for a special performance of the track Our People.
Each year the City of Sydney clean-up crews undertake a major clean-up operation to guarantee our inner city streets and parks are shining by early morning on New Year’s Day.
Trucks, sweepers and compactors are deployed by crews who work through the night to ensure our city is clean and accessible.
“We hope last night’s celebration was a joyous occasion for all, bringing a spirit of optimism and community to the new year. I’d like to wish everyone a safe, peaceful and happy 2024,” the Lord Mayor said.
