Police have seized six cars, issued 79 infringement notices and charged five people with dangerous driving as part of an ongoing operation targeting dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour on the Gold Coast.
As part of Operation Tango Vinyl which commenced in March, a large police presence intercepted vehicles across the northern Gold Coast on Saturday night (April 10), including at a carpark on Old Coach Road in Upper Coomera where a small number of cars and people gathered.
Acting Chief Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said the results highlight Queensland Police’s ongoing commitment to proactively addressing this dangerous and criminal behaviour.
“Dangerous driving and hooning-related incidents not only endanger the lives of those involved, but they also put innocent members of the public at great risk.
“We will continue to target this type of behaviour and our officers remain focused on investigating and taking action against those involved.”
In one instance, around 11.30pm (April 10) police observed a white Ford sedan allegedly driving dangerously at the intersection of Geary Crescent and Jade Drive in Molendinar.
Around 12.40am (April 11) officers saw the same car heading east on Southport Nerang Road where it allegedly travelled at high speed and through multiple red lights. Around 1.30am the car was again observed travelling at high speed on the incorrect side of the road at Dohles Rocks Road, Murrumba Downs.
The alleged driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old Burpengary man, attempted to flee from the car near the intersection of Sydney Street and Oxley Avenue in Redcliffe.
He was taken into custody shortly after and charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle, two counts of failing to stop at a red light, and one count each of offences involving registration, possession of explosives and fail to stop. He was denied police bail and is due to appear in Redcliffe Magistrates Court today.
As part of the results police:
- Issued 79 tickets for a range of driving-related infringements
- Issued five charges for dangerous operation of a vehicle
- Charged two drivers for drink driving and two for drug driving
- Seized six vehicles
- Issued 12 type-two related hooning offences
“Police investigations remain ongoing into this incident, as well as other matters across the Gold Coast from the previous weekends, and we expect to take further enforcement action,” Acting Chief Superintendent Sheldon said.
