Hampshire Road upgrades to benefit cyclists and pedestrians

Brimbank Council continues to transform the heart of Sunshine with improvements to the northern section of Hampshire Road now complete – and featuring Brimbank’s first separated bike lanes.

Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council is pleased work has finished on the $1.66 million project to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the fast-growing centre of Sunshine.

“The significant improvements at the Ballarat Road end of Hampshire Road are transforming this area into an attractive, well-planned space that is easy to negotiate.

“The upgrades include new traffic signals at the intersection of Hampshire and Foundry Roads, new footpaths, street lighting, soft landscaping and the installation of raised pedestrian crossings.

“We’ve also added on-road separated bike lanes – a first for Brimbank.

“This will provide a safer connection for cyclists travelling to the Sunshine train station, and improve safety and traffic flow around the Sunshine Town Centre.

“Council is delighted these improvements are making a real difference to nearby residents – by creating a space where people feel safe and can enjoy shopping in the town centre,” Cr Congreve said.

This project was jointly funded by Brimbank Council ($1.147 million) and the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads ($513,000), through the Victorian Government’s Safe Systems Road Infrastructure Program.

The project is part of Council’s Hampshire Road Master Plan 2014 which outlines a vision for the redevelopment of Sunshine’s main street into a unique and vibrant destination.

The next stage of improvements on Hampshire Road will commence in 2020 and will focus on upgrading the M.B. Lynch Memorial Gardens, and also creating a beautiful civic green space between Service Street and Devonshire Road.
