Liberals break promise to Tasmanian women on terminations

Tasmanian Labor
  • Tasmanians wait two years to be told termination service will not be replaced
  • Courtney abandons Tasmanian women
  • Tasmanian women needing terminations remain disadvantaged
  • The Hodgman Government has kept Tasmanians waiting without a low cost termination clinic for almost two years before breaking its promise to establish a new provider.

In Parliament today Health Minister, Sarah Courtney, abandoned the Government’s commitment to work with the private provider and pointed blame to them.

Shadow Health Minister, Sarah Lovell, said that Ms Courtney’s announcements proved the extent of the Government’s blatant dishonesty about the matter.

“The failed former Health Minister, Michael Ferguson, stated a number of times that the facility was on hold due to minor capital works and that these works were occurring. These statements are proven to be false,” Ms Lovell said.

“The Hodgman Government’s negligence for Tasmanian women needing to terminate a pregnancy has been exposed.

“It is disgraceful that Tasmanians have waited almost two years since the closure of Tasmania’s last low cost termination clinic only to find out that a replacement service will not be established.

“Tasmanian women have been disadvantaged and have had to suffer the consequences of the Governments inaction on this matter for almost two years – first because of Michael Ferguson’s personal beliefs, and now because Sarah Courtney failure to live her claim of being a pro-choice Health Minister.”
