Major contract awarded as Mooloolah River Interchange works ramp up

JOINT STATEMENT
  • The Mooloolah River Interchange has hit another milestone with the contract to deliver the next stage of early works now awarded.
  • New maps confirm the corridor for The Wave Stage 3 (Metro) between the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Mountain Creek, connecting key jobs, services and growth areas across the Coast.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering better infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast, with this project to unlock the next stage of transport investment and support the future metro corridor.

The Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of fixing the Sunshine Coast’s congested road network, with a major contract now awarded to kick off the next stage of early works for the Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI).

McIlwain Civil Engineering and SEE Civil Joint Venture will deliver the works, including major earthworks and embankment construction to prepare the site for the full interchange upgrade.

After a decade of delays, cost blowouts and neglect under the former State Labor Government, the Crisafulli Government is delivering the infrastructure the region needs to keep up with growth.

This early works package will see tens of thousands of tonnes of material moved to build a strong foundation for the new interchange infrastructure, which is a critical step in unlocking the next phase of transport investment on the Sunshine Coast.

The works will reshape the interchange in preparation for The Wave Stage 3 (Metro), with the interchange upgrade designed to support the future metro corridor and improve traffic flow through one of the Coast’s busiest pinch points.

Progress also continues on The Wave (Stage 3) with new maps released today showing where The Wave will run between the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Mountain Creek, including confirmed corridor alignment and station locations.

The Wave Stage 3 will deliver a high-capacity, high-frequency metro-style service connecting key growth areas, major employment hubs and essential services across the Sunshine Coast. The upgrades will also integrate with the future heavy passenger rail connection at Birtinya.

Investigations are continuing for the corridor north of Mountain Creek through to Maroochydore CBD and the Sunshine Coast Airport, with final corridor details expected in 2027 as planning accelerates for the next stage of the project.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the Mooloolah River Interchange upgrade was a gamechanger for the Sunshine Coast.

“The Crisafulli Government is delivering the infrastructure needed to support one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions, which is why we’re delivering The Wave all the way to the airport,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“After years of broken promises by Labor, these early works on The Wave are another way we are delivering the largest transport infrastructure investment ever planned for the Sunshine Coast.”

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the upgrade was critical to uplifting safety for thousands of motorists every day.

“After Labor failed to invest in the infrastructure the Sunshine Coast needs, we’re stepping up and delivering a project that will transform how locals move around the region,” Minster Mickelberg said.

“The former State Labor Government totally neglected the Sunshine Coast for decades – they rolled over to the Commonwealth on the Mooloolah River Interchange and mothballed the project, and they wouldn’t have delivered The Wave to the airport.

“Both the MRI and The Wave will reduce congestion, improve safety and support a high-frequency metro system that connects people to jobs, health care and education.”

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said these upgrades would make a real difference for locals who rely on it every day.

“The fix for one of the worst and most dangerous points on the Sunshine Motorway is finally being delivered by the Crisafulli Government and we continue to hit major milestones in our progress,” Ms Simpson said.

“This is one of the most important transport corridors on the Sunshine Coast and this project means safer, smoother and faster trips for everyone.

“After a decade of decline and neglect under Labor, the Crisafulli Government is finally getting on with delivering the Mooloolah River Interchange – as we promised.”
