Major upgrade for Heyfield’s Gordon Street

Wellington Shire Council has approved a $500,000 renewal of Gordon Street in the timber town of Heyfield.

The upgrade, on the section of Gordon Street between George Street and Harbeck Street, will comprise resurfacing, improved drainage, landscaping and new trees, as well as a service lane with a parking area that will offer more than 40 parking spaces.

“The road upgrade and the new off-street parking area will improve safety for preschoolers, teachers and parents around Heyfield Kindergarten as well as users of the Heyfield Tennis Club,” Wellington Shire Council Mayor Garry Stephens said.

“Gordon Street sits at the heart of Heyfield’s sporting precinct, with nearby grounds offering football, netball, cricket and basketball – so it’s an important upgrade for locals and the many visitors that the sports grounds attract,” Cr Stephens added.

The renewal will connect Gordon Street into Heyfield’s path network, improving community access to Gordon Street Recreation Reserve, and the nearby Apex Park and Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.

The Gordon Street upgrade is part of Council’s 2020/21 capital works program and is supported by the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program.

Council is also set to carry out works around Heyfield Hall in McFarlane Street.

The upgrade will include improvements to footpaths and parking as well as narrowing a section of McFarlane Street near the corner of Temple Street, which will reduce traffic speeds and shorten the road crossing distance for pedestrians.

The McFarlane Street work is funded through the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.
