National Park visitors asked to consider heatwave

Visitors to National Parks in parts of southern Queensland should consider whether it is appropriate to undertake high intensity physical activity during expected heatwave conditions over the next few days.

Advice from the Bureau of Meteorology is that widespread severe to extreme heatwave conditions are forest to develop across southern and southeast Queensland over the next few days and are likely to persist into next week.

Physical activities such as walking, hiking and mountain or trail bike riding in these conditions will be difficult and potentially detrimental to your health.

We are asking people to plan ahead if you choose to undertake these activities in one of our National Parks.

Take a first-aid kit and know how to use it, remember to slip, slop, slap and take a lot of drinking water.

If you’re going for a walk or a hike, know your limits. Be realistic about your physical condition, knowledge, experience and skills keeping in mind it be harder in such extreme heat.

Importantly, it is illegal to smoke in National Parks – this is vital to remember in these conditions, as is the fact that fires can happen anywhere any time.

By following these simple tips and considering the predicted weather conditions, everyone visiting our National Parks should have a safe and enjoyable time.
