New Chief Research Officer to further build research excellence

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has appointed Professor Christina Twomey as the ARC’s inaugural Chief Research Officer (CRO), to commence in January 2023.

The senior leadership role will play a key role in driving the ARC’s new Strategy 2022-25 and driving a contemporary, collaborative, service-centric approach to meet the needs of the diverse research sector.

ARC CEO Ms Judi Zielke PSM, said that this appointment reaffirms the ARC’s commitment to strengthening the Council’s engagement with researchers and universities.

“Professor Twomey brings invaluable knowledge, having extensive experience of engaging with the ARC as a researcher. Professor Twomey has received funding under the ARC’s Discovery and Linkage Programs including an ARC Future Fellowship, and has also served on the ARC College of Experts.

“Professor Twomey has impeccable academic credentials as a prize-winning historian and an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities and of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.”

“In addition, Professor Twomey brings extensive leadership experience, having formerly served as Vice-President of Monash University’s Academic Board and Head of the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts.”

Prior to this appointment, Professor Twomey was to have taken up a role in 2023 as the ARC Executive Director for Humanities and Creative Arts. That role will be advertised in the new year.
