Premier refuses to apologise to public housing residents

The Andrews Labor Government has a long list of things to apologise for in its management of public housing.

The Victorian Ombudsman has once again called on Daniel Andrews to apologise to the families he made prisoners in their own homes through the snap lockdown of North Melbourne and Flemington public housing towers during the Covid pandemic.

The Andrews Labor Government should also apologise for failing to release the priority waiting lists for public housing, and guarantee Victorians that the next list will be released on time.

Over the past eight years, urgent public housing waiting lists have ballooned by more than 330 per cent, and more than 33,000 Victorian families do not have a safe home to go to each night.

Alarmingly, more than 500 Victorian families are added to the waiting list every quarter, and are forced to sleep in tents, vehicles or in short term accommodation.

Shadow Minister for Housing, Richard Riordan, said Daniel Andrews must apologise to the Victorian community for having so badly neglected one of the most basic roles of government.

“At a time when billions have been spent on over-budget tunnels around the city, Victorians have been left with an underfunded and ballooning housing shortage,” Mr Riordan said.

“A home for all Victorians is one of the most simple commitments a caring and responsible government ought to be able to keep.”
