Shooting AUS (SA) would like to advise that Richard Sammon has resigned from the position of Shotgun National Coach to take up a new job outside of sport. During his 5-year tenure, Richard led AUS’ Shotgun National Team to many World Cups, multiple World Championships, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He has had a positive impact on the development of athletes within the Team, including supporting them to podium performances.
SA CEO, Adam Sachs, said: “On behalf of SA and our Shotgun athletes, I would like to thank Richard for the energy and commitment that he has brought to his support of them over the past 5 years. Richard took up his leadership of our Shotgun National Team at a critical point in the qualification period for the Tokyo Games and played an important role in helping athletes to navigate the challenges of Olympic nomination and selection immediately before COVID hit AUS and the world. After being absent from international competition for almost 18 months, Richard and our Shotgun Team emerged from lockdown in AUS to deliver strong performances in Tokyo, including two athletes to the Women’s Trap final.”
Sachs continued: “Away from the competition environment, Richard has contributed significantly to the establishment of strong working relationships between our Shotgun athletes and the world class performance support that is provided to Shooting through the VIC Institute of Sport (VIS). Key VIS staff have been integrated into our Shotgun National Team and will continue to play a critical role in support of our athletes and coaching staff as we progress our qualification and preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
Following the completion yesterday of the ISSF World Championships where AUS’ Shotgun athletes recorded 5 Top 10 finishes including a silver medal in the Women’s Trap Team event, SA will now be working with our athletes, coaches and performance support team and system partners to review and evolve our planning for our team to be best supported in Paris at next year’s Olympic Games.
