Traffic operation targets start of school holidays, South Australia

In a 24-hour blitz beginning on Friday morning, police caught 54 drivers driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A statewide operation, Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive ran from 7am Friday 8 July to 7am Saturday 9 July, resulting in 6254 alcotests and 242 drug tests being conducted.

Of those tested, 31 drivers were detected for a drink driving offence (0.5%) and 22 drivers were detected for a drug offence.

Sixteen drivers had their vehicles impounded and 19 were issued an immediate loss of licence.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge Traffic Services Branch said some drivers made poor choices to start school holidays.

“This operation was timed to coincide with the start of school holidays and the anticipated increase in traffic around schools and heading off on road journeys across the state. Unfortunately, 54 people decided to drive after drinking or taking drugs on Friday and Saturday.”

“It should be no surprise to drink and drug drivers to be caught by police as we will continue to run these operations to enforce the law and protect other road users.”

During the previous operation, on 18 and 19 June, 30 drivers were detected committing either an alcohol or drug driving offence.
