Working together to save our region 159 million litres of water a year

Thanks to the NSW Government’s $4.4 million Active Leak Detection Program, contractors have completed an inspection of Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s entire network of water supply infrastructure.

Launching in 2022, the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water have been providing regional local governments across the state with funding to find water supply leaks in their local area.

Specialist leak detectors have inspected hundreds of kilometres of water mains across the Snowy Monaro between November 2023 and January 2024, finding 15 potential leaks in our water supply network.

While this may not sound like a substantial result, these 15 leaks together are estimated to lose five litres of water very second. This works out to over 159 million litres in a calendar year.

With the results in-hand, Council’s water team will now work to confirm each potential leak and repair confirmed sites as soon as possible.

By saving this enormous volume of water and ensuring our supply network is secure, the burden placed on residents and businesses in our region through any future drought or water restrictions will be lessened.

The NSW Government’s $4.4 million Active Leak Detection Project has saved billions of litres of water so far across more than 57 local government areas, as part of the wider Regional Leakage Reduction Program.
