The Law Council of Australia congratulates Her Excellency Judge Hilary Charlesworth on her re-election as a permanent Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the term 2024-2033.
“Judge Charlesworth is regarded in Australia and internationally as a pre-eminent scholar who has made an exceptional contribution to human rights and international law,” Law Council of Australia President, Mr Luke Murphy said.
“Her extensive list of academic appointments in Australia, the United States and Europe, and prolific authorship on a wide range of topics is testament to this. In Australia, her work led to the adoption of the country’s first human rights act, in the Australian Capital Territory in 2004.
“Judge Charlesworth has already served with distinction as a judge on the ICJ following her election in 2021 and as Judge ad hoc in the cases of Guyana v Venezuela and Australia v Japan. She is notably only the fifth woman to be appointed a permanent judge of the ICJ. We commend the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council on her re-election.”
